Voorbij involved in construction work for the new Scaldia Harbour – Flushing marine quay

Our fellow subsidiary Haverkort Voormolen won the ‘Scaldia 2’ project this February. The project involved constructing some 1,700 metres of marine quay in Flushing East harbour, in Borsele. Approximately 1,200 metres of quay will be used for container handling, and another 500 metres for break bulk handling.

The project is to be executed for 44 million euros for Exploitatiemaatschappij Schelde-Maas, a joint undertaking between Zeeland Seaports and the Port of Rotterdam. Breda-based consulting engineers Lievense are to supervise. The main contractor is Haverkort Voormolen.

The quay construction will be in a partially excavated dock, and the north and south quay will comprise combi piling with load relief flooring and quay wall, also on a foundation of MV tension piles and precast prestressed concrete piles. The end quay consists of capped combi piling, with anchor piling and tension piles.

The work is to be performed in an open excavation adjacent to the tidal zone. The construction of temporary dyke and pumping will keep the construction dry enough to allow work to proceed.

Voorbij Funderingstechniek will apply a range of foundation techniques on this project. Some examples are combi piling, precast concrete piles and MV piles. We view MV piles, or Muller Verpresspfahlen, as a challenge. Although we have never used them before, we have every confidence in a successful installation.

Our work is expected to start this June, and will take nine months at least. According to an extremely ambitious plan, the entire project will complete in October 2009.
